History

10_05_14bouboulina
Spetses is also called the "isola delle spazie", as the Venetians used to call it, due to the wonderful fragrances that the flowers and herbs offer at this time. The Pytyussa of Greek antiquity, ie pine-footed, is the greenest island of Argosaronic, with the trees being in constant conversation with its emerald waters.
The history of Spetses begins from the Early Helladic period around 2300 BC, according to findings. At the time of the Frankish rule (1200-1460), Spetses belong to the Venetians who follow the Turks. In the 15th century there was a large settlement wave, which meant significant settlements of Christian-Albanian families (Arvanites) to the south and their involvement with the local populations. In the 17th century, the population of the island, mainly consisting of Arvanites, was increased by settlers from Lakonia, Kynouria, Argolida and Ermionida. New colonies are made in the 18th century from the neighboring coasts of the Peloponnese, resulting in the island's final population composition. The original medieval settlement on the island was built in the present location of Kastelli - which will say an island castle. In the same location was created the first town of Spetses in the middle of the 19th century. Unfortunately Kastelli was totally destroyed in the late 1770s by strong Turkish-Albanian forces and the Spetses pay a heavy blood tax because of the island's participation in the Orlofians, the revolution of the Peloponnese in 1769-70. On 3 April 1821 the Spetses are the first rebels to rebel Lifting their flag with the words FREEDOM OR DEATH. Previous on March 13, Laskarina Bouboulina's revolutionary energy has risen, raising her own revolutionary flag on the mast of the Agamemnon ship, and greeted her with cannons in front of the Old Port of Spetses. After the end of the Revolution Spetses began to decline and the population It has declined. The Industrial Revolution slowly laid the sailboats on the chasm of history. The development of the steam engine and then the internal combustion engine gave the final swing to Spetses as a shipbuilding center with the parallel development of Piraeus as the first port of the country. Many Spetses were invaded for a better life. One of them was Sotirios Anargyros, who returned to Spetses in the early 1900s, sets the foundations for the further development of Spetses among them and the luxurious hotel for the time Posidonio. The Asia Minor Disaster in 1922 brings many refugees to the island in search of a better life.
